Tuesday, 24 February / Bag Hunt

I'm on a new-bag hype. I own so many handbags but have alternated between two for the last six months. Nothing has satisfied my accessory desires like my Zara city tote and Mango cross-body bag. I'm in desperate need of a new companion, and I'm searching far beyond my bank account.

Now to face reality and head to Zara, HM and Mango... outlet.

Monday, 23 February / Dressing Up in Dressing Gowns

My flatmates and I commenced a road trip to the coast on Saturday and enjoyed all things seaside-y. I saw this chilly endeavour as the perfect opportunity to dress up in my new dressing gown coat, paired with my Stan Smiths, and soon realised that this outfit is getting a little Groundhog day. The time I spend each morning carefully crafting my outfit is, somewhat, dismissed by chucking this coat over the top - sigh. Still, even if this coat is all that is visible on my freezing little bod this season, I'll be happy. It is so versatile, from day to night, with trainers to... something remotely smarter. I managed to grab this coat on Very.com for around £35, and have struggled to take it off since (and genuinely considered wearing this over my PJs on an evening... or daytime if we're being honest). As my dad would say, I haven't scheduled the operation to 'remove my new coat' yet, so expect to see it cropping up worryingly often over on my Instagram and blog. Be sure to follow @fromracheljane, if you haven't already.

On another note, though my flatmates and I genuinely contemplated staying up til 4am last night to watch the Oscars, we refrained. I woke up this morning with a Christmassy inclination as I grabbed my laptop to scroll through the winners (though mainly to choose my favourite dress of the night). If you haven't watched Eddie Redmayne's speech yet then I implore you to Youtube it, right now. I've always loved a bit of Eddie, but his Gollum-esque/precious realisation moment when holding the Oscar was potentially the cutest thing I've ever seen. Marius can do no wrong in my eyes... apart from already being married (though Hannah Bagshawe's Alexander Mcqueen was rather exquisite). My favourite looks of the night were, without doubt, Marion Cotillard (now, officially, my number 2 ultimate woman - it will take a lot to usurp Ms. Palermo), Sienna Miller and Carmen Ejogo. Unfortunately, no one in my house really cares too much about Ellie Saab or Nicole Kidman's red belt, so my Academy Award purge could only happen via my blog.

Thursday, 19 February / Empowered by Marc Jacobs

When satisfying my FW desires by stalking various style websites, I often appreciate the performance of a catwalk as much as the clothing. This has never been more true than how I felt when watching Tim Blank's video of Marc by Marc Jacobs 2015 'fall ready-to-wear' collection. With "Children of the Revolution" as the empowered accompaniment to the collection, I felt inspired to layer a few clashing prints and brandish "SOLIDARITY" across my left leg in some expression of feminist enthusiasm. The collection combines William Morris prints with bold colours and varying structures appearing both comfortable and confident. The infusion of 60s/70s inspiration with red, white and blue exaggerated the socialist aspect of the collection, and encouraged a sensation of nationalism, purged with the importance of youth culture.

The fresh-faced models walked with sass upon a bold green carpet, dominating the 'earth' beneath them, as is plausible for today's generation: making our mark on this planet. Though I'm not an advocator of bold prints, flowing silhouettes or Les-Mis style berets, I could see the vision behind Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier. Combining military tones with stern-faced young women, Tim Blanks highlights that the 'warped testament to the power of popular media insinuated itself as a subtext into today's show', as we were confronted with the vulnerability of adolescents within the 21st century's viciously tangled relationship with warfare.

Though I may not be racing to grab each item from Marc Jacob's collection (I will always be a monochrome girl at heart), I certainly felt inspired by his 'model army' and their capability to hold a crowd with radical clothing to emphasise the radical potential of today's youth culture.

Wednesday, 18 February / Edinburgh Bound

Early Monday morning my boyfriend and I ventured to Edinburgh for some sort of Valentines-esque experience. For us, this occasion entails few roses and love hearts but an abundance of tasty food and tasteful attire. Almost 3 years into our relationship we figured maybe a city break is expected for a couple as established as ourselves (read: usually spending our nights watching anything Ryan Gosling and eating anything greasy). So we gathered our hard earned, and terribly saved, pennies and booked for a one night stay at The Hilton Edinburgh (we were determined to portray "classy" for our romantic adventure). We effectively spent two days doing what we do best; eating and wandering, but with an excuse to spend money - being a tourist - and a comfier bed than normal to return to.

I figured, on the rare occasion I escape Newcastle, I would piece together a little post about our time away. A sort of "how to do valentines" for the less romantically inclined individual (someone who'd rather spend money on a portion of 'garlicky fries' than a teddy bear - yep,  they're real).

Newcastle has some impressive eateries/artisan coffee stops but I really enjoyed wandering the streets and taking advantage of all the good flavour Edinburgh had to offer. As quite the coffee connoisseur (a consequence of working at Whittards of Chelsea and an eternal reliance on caffeine), I'd say Wellington Coffee promoted the nicest coffee I've ever tasted. Mark and I both agreed that we could have drunk that frothy goodness all day long, and with the cafe's cool-toned furnishing and white-tiled walls, I think I enjoyed the quirky interior design as much as my latte.

For food on Monday evening we did a bit of research (we take these matters very seriously) and checked out GQ's city guide to the Scottish capital. We booked a place at The Outsider and gorged on scallops, duck breast and lemon sorbet. Next came Edinburgh's own 'speakeasy' Panda & Sons which fulfilled my Gatsby desires, whilst providing a tasty cocktail (to busy drinking it to photograph, obviously).

Aside from these favourite spots, we visited various other eateries and coffee shops (I know, how was there time?) before taxiing back to our hotel due to stiletto suffrage on my part. I'd say discovering that The Hilton's complimentary toiletries were all by Peter Thomas Roth was a true highlight for me, especially adorning the branded shower cap that was, probably, more expensive than my train ticket. Oh and with an abundance of herbal teabags positioned politely beside our kettle and mugs within the room, I found myself drinking camomile tea and (forgive me) decaf coffee, because, who doesn't love a posh-looking freebie?!

I guess I'd really recommend taking the approach that we did when heading for any city break: check out a city guide when you're spending big bucks, to avoid disappointment, but during the day be sure to take advantage of your time by wandering. Browse around, stop for as many breaks as possible, in as many new places as you can find and get the 'behind the scenes' tour of wherever you are. Find your way with small alleyways and walking, instead of public transport, as it's a cracking excuse to buy yourself some new trainers, all in the name of comfort.

Now to achieve that ultimate frothy latte with some Nescafe and a hand whisk #unilife.

Friday, 13 February / Paris Inspiration: Nightwear

Here's the second instalment of procrastination inspiration for my upcoming Paris trip. As you can see, the colour palette remains as varied as ever. I purchased my sixth grey jumper yesterday and I realised whilst trying to justify the knitwear to my flatmate that I really value varying structures in my closet.

As the turtleneck made itself comfortable in my wardrobe, nestled against it's grey companions, I admired the roll necks, the v necks, the high necks and all other neck-entitled knitwear hanging alongside. The shape of an item entirely alters the construction of an outfit, which is potentially the reason for my lack of 'basic tees' in my clothing archive. The array of outfits below is a prime example of this. Neutral tones but with varying structures that will overlap effortlessly and sophisticatedly.

Of course, since creating these 'inspo' collages, I've managed to acquire at least 3 lookalike items of my wish list. Therefore, it seems, the inspo list became more of a 'shopping list', and I'm now the proud owner of Stan Smiths, a dressing-gown wrap coat and a grey roll neck. Look out for these new additions in the future. I'm heading to Edinburgh this week, so I'll no doubt work towards checking off everything on said list (oh the woes of student loans...) I'm kidding, I'm actually heavily poor because of this monochrome addiction. But at least I'm struggling through beans on toast each evening in the best Zara has to offer.

Monday, 09 February / The New 'Necessary' Boots

I admit that I'm guilty of the 'I really needed them' trick. I've applied my need vs. want argument to one-too-many purchases over the years (why stop now eh?)

The thing is, there is always an element to whatever I buy that makes that item essential to me. Take these boots, for example. Yes I already have black boots, patent black boots, patent black boots with a heel. But that crocodile pattern. Now that is something that does not feature on my excessively bursting clothing rack. So I pulled out my debit card and committed a selfless act: gave these babies a home.

Apparently wandering into Clarks on a Sunday afternoon can be more detrimental to one's student bank account than initially thought...

Sunday, 08 February / Paris Inspiration: Daytime

As previously mentioned (on my blog and to anyone who will listen...) I'm heading to Paris next month.

I guess my burning obsession with Sex and the City has romanticised my view of city breaks and the fashions that will be worn when perusing the streets. In my head it's very much longline duster jackets, designer satchels and interesting headwear. Of course, Patricia Field won't be styling my week in the city of love so the reality will no doubt be bumbags and a mac-in-a-sac.

Here's my current inspiration for 'daywear': sultry neutrals and firm structuring. I'm going for comfort infused with Parisian chic (with the bumbag settled beneath some expensive-looking shirt). Look out for the nightwear version coming soon, and hopefully that will end my city break collages... though probably not... in fact definitely not... is it obvious I don't leave Newcastle often?

Friday, 06 February / Fashion Week

Fashion week is creeping upon us and the scent of upcoming trends is teasing my nostrils already.

There's something almost magical about fashion week as the 4 countries unite fashionistas and their followers. Though I may not study fashion academically, I certainly enjoy 'studying' it on my laptop, every night, for the month(ish) that designers boast their latest collections. I've never been a fan of spring/summer attire so the shows at this time always excite me for the winter months to return (even if they haven't even ended yet...) I've always been more faux fur and hot choc than swimsuits and Pimms so Feb-March time fashion weeks are certainly my favourite.

As usual, I'll be focussing my fashion lust on Alexander Wang and DKNY as the structural dynamic of these two tend to satisfy my androgynous (wannabe) desires.

I'm heading to Paris the week following Paris fashion week (woe is me) but hopefully the spirit of FW will still be in the air. Irrelevant to that, I'll still be sassing the streets in camel tones and too-high-for-walking shoes in an attempt to match up to the professional fashionistas (minus the paparazzi and complements).
